Programs

There are many unique and wonderful programs at Sherman, including our library and our working garden, which also serves as our outdoor classroom.

Our Library

The library program at Sherman supports the District mission of providing every student “with an equal opportunity… to achieve his or her maximum potential.” Students visit the library once a week with their class for story-time or a library skills lesson led by our librarian who also collaborates with teachers to create exciting, effective learning experiences and to teach students to find and evaluate information from both print and online sources. The library’s large collection of books meets both students’ educational and recreational reading needs.

School-wide events sponsored by the library include a Read Aloud Pajama Day. The library’s spacious, light-filled rooms and well-stocked shelves demonstrate the value the Sherman community places on literacy, as well as its belief that reading and learning are a lifelong source of empowerment and joy.

Our Garden

Sherman Elementary has a thriving garden that does double duty of being an exploratory green space as well as our outdoor classroom - because science comes alive outside! We are partnered with Education Outside to foster an engaging curriculum of science-based study for all grades. Much of what we grow is also really tasty, and we take advantage of our delicious bounty by learning about nutrition, agriculture, and cooking.

Middle School Feeders

Between 2012 and 2017 the choice process for middle school assignment will have younger siblings as the first preference, followed by a preference for students enrolled in an elementary school that is one of the K8 feeder schools, and then a preference for students living in areas of the city with the lowest average test scores (known as CTIP1).  These preferences, known as tiebreakers, will be used when the number of requests for a school is greater than the number of seats available.
Sherman is one of five elementary schools which feed into Marina Middle School. The other four feeding elementary schools are Lau, Montessory, Redding and Spring Valley.
Full information on the new middle school feeder system can be found here.
